The Day the Washing Machine Came Alive
We have now lived in Ndola, Zambia for several days! We have grown somewhat accustomed to the heat and dust. Every person we have met has welcomed us with open arms. Needless to say the transition from the States to Africa has been wonderful so far. This is not to say that it has been easy or unemotional!
If I am completely honest the first night in our new home was very emotional. Benjamin had a mild fever and both he and Abigail had quite a bit of congestion linked with coughing and sneezing! I went to lay Ben down in his bed and about lost it due to the overwhelming sense of pride I had for him and the rest of my beautiful family.
Emily has been amazing, keeping our home clean and caring for the children as well as going out of her way to communicate and build relationships with the OMNI staff at our site.
In the process of moving here we realized how it important it was to quickly set up a simple yet familiar lifestyle. We have purchased several items that have made life a bit easier and bought food that the children would find familiar. We are still unloading our things and finding things all over town without getting too lost in the process. More about that later…
The OMNI Site already had a washing machine which, has been such a blessing! We have probably finished 10 loads thus far – it is small but very effective machine! The one interesting facet about this machine is the “jig” it does at the end of every cycle. The first time we ran the washing machine we did not realize how spirited it was and had placed our coffee pot and knives on it’s top. Once the spin cycle began we dashed to it’s side to catch the falling knife block and coffee pot!!
I will see if I can get a video of the machine doing it’s dance!! I have leveled off it’s feet so it is a bit more controlled but nevertheless hysterical to watch – especially sit on when trying to stabilize it! Ben’s response to its commotion was the most memorable when he exclaimed, “Is our house blasting off?” I am assuming we will have many more fun and exciting stories to tell in the days, weeks and months to come! We will keep you posted…
